USC’s Women in House

USC’s Women in House

Introduction:
From November 21st to the 23rd, the Women’s Issues Network in partnership with the University Students’ Council will be sending approximately 25 undergraduate women at Western University to Canada’s capital city Ottawa, where they will spend a day shadowing a female MP at Parliament.

A literature scan reveals that women are underrepresented in the highest forms of elected leadership on many other university campuses across North America, and many of the systemic barriers facing female university students that deter them from running are often the same barriers faced by women at municipal, provincial and federal levels of government. This exciting experience hopes to encourage and empower women’s participation in politics by giving young women the opportunity to experience representation up-close. Given the lack of representation of women in politics, this initiative seeks to raise awareness of the roles women play in politics, as well as offer the opportunity to learn about the ways women can get connected and involved at any political level.

All aspects of the program will be subsidized, however students will be required to pay for any personal expenses, along with a $30 participation fee.

Students will be selected to attend based off of a two page written proposal that includes your perspectives to the following questions:
Why would you like to take part in this initiative?
Why do you think this is an important initiative for women to take part in?
What are you hoping to gain by participating in this experience?
Who is a woman in our Canadian political system that you admire and why (either past or present)?
What are some ways you are involved on campus or within the London community, and how has that shaped your leadership experience?
